I must admit, I am a fan of NYX. They are one of my favorite affordable brands and the fact that they’re rapidly expanding and becoming easily available is making me warm to them more.
I have a number of their products now, mostly their matte lipsticks and not so long ago I completed my collection (of shades I wanted, not of their entire range) so I figured it was time for a review.
There are more pros than cons so I will start with the cons. The shade range is varied but many of the shades are not (in my opinion) women of colour friendly. Many of the colours are very light and white-based and can look chalky, others wash me out. For that reason, I mostly avoided nudes and light pinks and stuck to rich reds and pinks for my collection.
Secondly, this isn’t really a con but it’s worth a mention: I don’t find the finish to be very matte. They’re more semi-matte, if you’ve tried their soft matte lip creams before, the finishes are very similar.
Onto the pros. I love these lipsticks, they’re probably the best affordable “matte” lipsticks I’ve come across so far. They’re creamy, hydrating, and very pigmented. They’re long-lasting and layer well. The formula is almost an exact dupe for the MAC matte lipsticks. If I had to compare the two, the MAC lipsticks beat the NYX in two aspects: they last longer, and the shade range is better (especially wearable shades for women of colour). However, given the fact that the NYX lipsticks are remarkably cheaper, it’s something I’m willing to overlook.
In terms of the shades I have, my favorites are definitely the two nudes; Euro Trash and Strawberry Daiquiri. Euro Trash is like a your-lips-but-better nude (it’s what I expected MAC Whirl to look like on my lips), while Strawberry Daiquiri was a total surprise as I’m not usually a fan of apricot/peach nudes but I absolutely adore it.
My least favorite would have to be my out-of-my-comfort-zone pick; the very orange Indie Flick. I feel like it clashes with my skin tone slightly but it might my the yellow undertone as my mother has the same skin-tone as me except she has peachy undertones and it suits her just fine.
Overall, they’re definitely a product I would recommend. If you’re a fan of the MAC matte lipstick formula, these are a way cheaper alternative and, in my opinion, just as good.
